More Than 25% of Medical Group Practices Nationwide Are Affiliated With Integrated Systems
Over the 10-year period ending at midyear 2010, the number of medical group practices affiliated with integrated systems increased dramatically, to 3,365 in 2010 from just 2,014 in 2001. Although accounting for fewer than one in five (19.6%) groups in 2001, system-affiliated groups made up more than one-quarter (26.1%) of the total medical group practice count in 2010, a result of the growing number of groups in systems and a moderate drop in the number of groups without system ties.
Membership in an integrated system allows medical groups to share financial risk, reduce operating costs and increase the efficiency of care.
Growth in the number of medical group practices in integrated systems was positive and steady every year between 2001 and 2010, a trend that is expected to continue as groups acknowledge new health care reform quality measures.
