THE HOSPITALS/SYSTEMS DIGEST FOR 2010 HAS BEEN RELEASED!
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 90 million U.S. residents suffer from chronic diseases, accounting for 75% of health care costs annually. The rising prevalence of these conditions—combined with an aging population—brings to the forefront the need for real-world, patient-level data to analyze health care trends, benchmark best practices and forecast coming market conditions.

As a response to this need, sanofi-aventis is pleased to announce the release of volume 5 of the Hospitals/Systems Digest, first in the three-part Managed Care Digest Series® for 2010. This edition of the Hospitals/Systems Digest includes patient-level, chronic disease-specific claims data and extensive diagnosis-related discharge data on inpatients with any of 10 common chronic diseases. These data provide the backbone for chronic disease case studies and Digest topics, such as:
- The dynamic relationship between chronic disease and a steadily aging U.S. population
- How treatment patterns influence the discharge destination of patients with chronic diseases
- The impact of facility ownership and system affiliation on average length of stay and hospital inpatient charges
- The burden of complications and comorbidities and their effects on treatment of chronic diseases.
The example below illustrates how higher percentages of Type 2 diabetes patients with multiple comorbidities/complications in Texas may have dramatically increased average annual facility charges across the state.
Chronic disease-specific data complement the Digest’s comprehensive analysis of more than 5,000 acute-care hospitals nationally, as well as the wide range of hospitals, physicians, managed care organizations and other providers joining forces to form highly integrated systems.
The data are gathered by SDI, Plymouth Meeting, Pa., a leading provider of innovative health care data products and analytic services.
