MCOs Add Six Million Medicaid Members in 2010
Medicaid MCO enrollment increased a remarkable 17% between 2009 (35.2 million) and 2010 (41.2 million), far and away the largest year-to-year boost since at least 2005.
Enrollment in Medicaid HMOs–which accounted for 67.6% of all Medicaid MCO membership in 2010–led this enrollment jump, by adding 5.4 million Medicaid recipients as members, to 27.9 million in 2010.
The effects of the recession can be discerned in this Medicaid MCO enrollment growth. As many states looked for ways to trim their budgets starting in 2008, more Medicaid recipients were required to join MCOs.
