Share of T1D Cases in the IP Setting Tops Share of Those for T2D in 2023

The percentage of all-payer Type 1 diabetes (T1D) cases treated in the inpatient (IP) setting exceeded that of Type 2 diabetes (T2D) cases by a notable eight percentage points in 2023.

From 2022 to 2023, the IP percentage of commercial atrial fibrillation cases was highest in the Southwest Region, increasing by 2.1 percentage points after a mild decline from 2021 to 2022.

With patient severity and average length of stay both on the rise (up 5% and 10% from 2019, respectively), hospitals are overburdened. Volumes in the IP setting are projected to grow 2% in the next decade, particularly among cardiovascular patients. There will, therefore, be a continued shift to home care, with an expected increase of 20% by 2033.2
