Excess Deaths Reveal Challenges in U.S. Response to COVID-19

Excess deaths—the difference between observed and expected deaths over a period of time—provide information about the burden of mortality directly or indirectly attributable to COVID-19.

Since February 2020, all-cause deaths (including COVID-19) have exceeded the threshold for expected deaths by more than 220,000, highlighting the severe impact of the pandemic in the U.S.
